Instagram UTM parameters for your bio link and Stories
Put utm_source=instagram and utm_medium=social on every link in your bio and on every Story link sticker, with utm_campaign naming what the link is selling. GA4 counts instagram as a social site, so those taps land in Organic Social without any custom channel setup.
The interactive UTM builder loads with this page, pre-filled for Instagram, and runs entirely in your browser.
instagram is on Google's social source list and social is one of the six medium values GA4's Organic Social rule accepts, so both halves of that rule agree.
Where to put it
Bio: in the Instagram app on Android or iPhone, go to Edit profile, then Links, then Add external link, and paste the tagged URL.
More than one bio link: Instagram supports several and lets you reorder them, so give each its own utm_content value.
Stories: add the link sticker to an organic Story and paste the tagged URL. One link sticker per Story.
Captions: leave them out. A caption can't carry a clickable link, so a tag there never records a tap.
Instagram ads: tag them in Meta Ads Manager with the Facebook Ads preset. Story ads get their own call-to-action sticker, not the link sticker.
On organic Instagram, tagged links have two homes: the bio and the Story link sticker. Captions can't carry a clickable link at all. So Instagram UTM parameters are really two tagging jobs, and they need different habits.
The bio link serves every post, so tag it for what it sells. Every post that says "link in bio" sends people to the same URL, which makes utm_campaign a poor place for one post's name. Name the campaign after the offer the link points at, and change the tag when the destination changes. Instagram lets you add several bio links and reorder them; give each a different utm_content (shop, newsletter, booking) or they collapse into one row.
Stories take one link each, so tag each Story. An organic Story carries one link sticker, which makes it the one place on Instagram where a per-post tag costs nothing. Put the Story's topic or date in utm_content and the report shows which Story sent each visit. There's more on reading those numbers in how to track Instagram Story link clicks.
Ads run through a different pipe. The link sticker only works on organic Stories. Story ads get an automatically placed call-to-action sticker instead, and you can't add a link sticker to a boosted or partnership Story. Ads are tagged in Meta Ads Manager with a paid medium. Keep organic on social and paid on paid_social, and GA4 splits the same Instagram audience into Organic Social and Paid Social for you.
Type everything in lowercase. GA4 treats utm_source=instagram and utm_source=Instagram as two different values, so one capital letter splits your Instagram traffic into two rows.
Test the hop between the bio and your site. If your bio points at a link-in-bio page or a short link rather than straight at your site, your tags have to survive that redirect. Run the finished link through the redirect checker and confirm the utm_ values are still on the final URL. If they aren't, why UTM parameters get stripped covers the usual culprits.
Questions
What is UTM in Instagram?
A UTM is a set of tags added to a link, such as utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social, that tells your analytics where a visit came from. Instagram has no UTM field of its own; you add the tags to the URL you paste into your bio or a Story link sticker, and your analytics reads them when someone taps through.
What are the 5 UTM parameters?
utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content. Google says to always use the first three. For an Instagram bio link, utm_content earns its place too, because it separates your bio links from each other. utm_term is described by Google as the paid keyword, so organic Instagram rarely needs it.
Can I put a UTM link in an Instagram caption?
You can type one, but nobody can tap it: captions can't carry a clickable link. Tagged links belong in your bio or on a Story link sticker.
Can I use a link sticker on an Instagram Story ad?
No. Link stickers only work on organic Stories. Story ads get an automatically placed call-to-action sticker, and you tag the ad's URL in Meta Ads Manager instead.
